Our History

Established in 1986, the Squamish Food Bank Society was started by concerned citizens as a temporary relief during economic difficulties. Working out of a shipping container and very small space in downtown Squamish, volunteers would prepare boxes of non-perishable foods to hand out to individuals and families. After about 20 years, the Food Bank found they were very much a needed service to the community, rather than simply a temporary relief option. It was decided to move into a bigger space on the old BC Rail site. They finally had room to expand and with that the opportunity to purchase more food in bulk and take donations from grocery stores.

The new location was an improvement, but it had two problems. One was the lack of refrigeration space and second was an accessibility problem. For most people it meant they had to have a car to access the food bank. In September 2020, The Squamish Food Bank Society and Squamish Helping Hands joined forces to create the Under One Roof (UOR) Community Food Hub. UOR provides us with a shared and centralized location from which to offer all our food services to the community.

The new and improved Squamish Food Bank!

The Squamish Food Bank, also known as The Market, is a non-profit, volunteer-run, food sharing organization. We are a grocery store style food bank, and have transitioned away from the typical narrative of a "food bank", flipping the script on what food access and equity have to look like.

Our mission is to operate a low-waste community food hub where food is rescued, repurposed and shared. Our focus is to create a safe and dignified grocery-store style shopping experience for all. Everyone has the right to healthy food, and there is enough healthy food for everyone. We serve almost 400 community members on a monthly basis, with over 1,000 visits. Our community is made up of a diverse group of folks, from all walks of life, who come together in this space, and feel comfortable doing so.
